silvi alcivar, poet, @thepoetrystore

silvi's work lives in the moment two strangers meet over her red royal typewriter--the anonymity an invitation to speak, the typewriter keys a willing listener. the poetry is almost incidental. the real work is offering what we all want at the core of our humanness—to feel witnessed and connected, present and seen, spontaneous and at play. while best known as an event poet, she's currently collaborating with musicians, classrooms, conferences, and more.

artspan mixer: meditation for creative focus

reserve your spot here or rsvp here

Have you ever wondered how mindfulness and meditation might affect your art practice? Do you want some ways to deepen your relationship to yourself or simple techniques to come back to presence when your artist mind is in a rut?

Artist Silvi Alcivar will speak about what meditation is and how, in as little as five to ten minutes a day, a consistent meditation practice can influence not just an artist’s life but also their art. By turning awareness inward, toward compassion for ourselves and acceptance of what is, meditation not only brings to the surface what we might not otherwise see, but can also help us find ease, inspiration, clarity, focus, intuition, authenticity, freedom from unhealthy thinking, motivation, and insight.

Silvi will suggest simple, accessible ways of approaching a practice and offer resources for continuing one. We will begin and end the hour with a short guided meditation. New and experienced meditators alike are welcome.

About the Presenter: Silvi Alcivar's poetry lives in the moment two strangers meet over her red royal typewriter--the anonymity an invitation to speak, the typewriter keys a willing listener. As poet and owner of the poetry store, she writes and sells typewritten custom poetry on-the-spot at events and as art. Since 2008, she’s worked in places as small as someone's living room, as intimate as a funeral, as recognizable as tedX, as close to home as San Francisco and as far off as Kauai. To date, she's written tens of thousand poems for as many people, that now live in wallets, on refrigerators, and an army bunker in Antarctica. She’s also published in anthologies, performed on radio and stage, shown in galleries, maintained residencies, and taught poetry classes to elders. Silvia holds degrees in writing and art from Cornell University and Penn State. Her work, informed by mindfulness practice, lives in pursuit of quiet via intimacy of scale, meaning, and the medium of the typewriter--where writing is a kinesthetic process of remaining in presence and trusting what comes. kids & art workshop: poetry, watercolor, and song

“Poetry, Watercolors and Song” is the first workshop from our new series called Social Art Roundtables. Designed in response to patient and survivor’s need for connection, these community project experiences will give participants the opportunity to create individual pieces of art that are later combined to form unique larger works. The program will feature professionals in the fields of literary, visual and performing arts including children’s book illustrators, music producers and muralists.

Our first Social Art Roundtable is only three weeks away!
Titled “Poetry, Watercolors and Song,” the online workshop will take place on Sunday, March 7th from 1.00 PM - 2:30 PM PST
Poet and educator Silvi Alcivar has designed an afternoon of writing, painting and creativity that is open to pediatric cancer patients and children suffering from other life-threatening illnesses (siblings and caregivers are welcome as well).
After the event, these poems will be translated into classical songs, turned into an anthology, and performed by operatic activist Chelsea Hollow and students from the Ruth Asawa School for the Arts.

Secession Art & Design's new show, break open, features Silvi Alcivar, Dianne Hoffman, and J. L. King, three Bay Area women artists who communicate the unsaid through their art. This curation reflects emotion, strength, beauty, and the hunger to create and to feel human connection. Silvi created 100 small pieces, each with a poem carefully placed inside a bottle, perfect for those in your life who want some magic and healing. Dianne was inspired by playful jewel tones that inform her storytelling, using found objects to create colorful windows into her imagination. J. L. King's surreal oil paintings set the stage for wonder and curiosity.
